PRESS RELEASE: Two Samoas Talks Continue in American Samoa


17-18 December 2015


The Two Samoas Economic Integration Task Force held its 3rd meeting on December 17 and 18 hosted by American Samoa at the Lee Auditorium North Wing.


The objective of this meeting was to confer on issues relating to trade in goods, trade in services, investment, and general provisions for economic cooperation. The goal is to create a draft outcomes document that will advance the discussion by the next meeting, slated for early next year.

The meeting was co-chaired by Fuiavailili Keniseli Lafaele, Director of the Department of Commerce, and Petesa Margaret Malua, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour. In a closed meeting, government officials and private sector representatives from both Samoas were present to make statements and take part in the discussions.

Micro-financing business seeks to serve American Samoa


South Pacific Business Development Foundation 

South Pacific Business Development President Gregory Casagrande and General Manager Ajay Verma with Mike Fuiava met with DOC Director Keniseli Lafaele to inquire about business opportunities for their micro-financing business in American Samoa.  DOC Director Lafaele provided them with a business licensing packet and other investment opportunities, then directed them to the AG office for legal structure advice and they have a meeting with the Governor’s Office before their flight back to Apia later this afternoon.


The South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) Foundation provides micro-finance opportunities in rural and peri-urban areas, encouraging small business owners to grow and flourish.  It is SPBD’s mission and vision to improve the quality of life for families living in poverty by creating a network of micro-enterprise development organizations and providing the guidance needed to build assets and maintain business.  The SPBD network extends across the South Pacific, with assistance programs in Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, and the Solomon Islands.  They are dedicated to eradicating poverty in the South Pacific, starting with the smallest but most important unit of Pacific culture: family.

Bidding Miss American Samoa good luck

DOC bids Miss American Samoa good luck






“Good luck Miss American Samoa!” from the Department of Commerce staff

Miss American Samoa, Anneliese Fa’aitumalo Sword, stopped by the Department of Commerce yesterday after her exit meeting with Honorable Governor Lolo Moliga. She left yesterday afternoon to Apia, Samoa and will be representing American Samoa in the Miss South Pacific pageant on December 14-20.

Miss Sword is accompanied by Miss American Samoa Incorporated (MASI) President Meafou Imo, Department of Commerce Territorial Planner Line Kruse, and Visitors Bureau Deputy Director Vaito’a Hans Langkilde. She will represent American Samoa in beauty and grace, and will also act as a spokesperson for attracting tourism and commerce to the Territory. Miss Sword is 26 years old and a teacher at South Pacific Academy.

This year will be the official relaunch of the Miss South Pacific Pageant to be renamed and rebranded as the “Miss Pacific Islands Pageant”. The theme this year is “Our Pacific Paradise”.
